The course lays the fundamentals of finance to students, discussing the role of money in the economy and the circulation of money and financial assets in the financial system, through financial markets and in the form of different financial instruments. It discusses the time value of money concept and different methods for project valuation, by combining theory with many practical examples from business and everyday life. The course provides insights into how the cost of capital can be determined and what considerations should be considered when companies decide on their capital structure and dividend policy. The course also addresses the recent developments in financial technology (FinTech).
The structure of the course requires certain numerical skills and accounting knowledge by students, and further encourages them to develop strong technical skills from lectures and assignments, as well as practical business acumen from real world case studies.
